Fire in the Hole (Women's West Series)

Enjoyable learning
An excellent read. I knew a little about the ludlow massacre, but never really understood the context of the time until I read this book. Now I tell some of the story to all of my college students as they take their first course in Business. It is important for them to understand the absolute corruption of power of that time, and the legitimacy of unions in correcting the abuse. Of course later unions get too much power in some industries and they become the abusers of power. This is a valuable book to set the stage for a century long look at power issues in the workplace.

Images of Appalachian Coalfields (Visual Studies)
Published in Hardcover by Temple Univ Press (April, 1989)
Authors: Builder Levy, Helen M. Lewis, and Cornell Capa
Average review score:

Excellent
This book is an excellent example of documentary photography of a people and way of life that is slowly (or quickly depending on where you live) passing from the American landscape. Builder Levy has a strong empathy for his subject and for the people he portrays in these marvelous b&w photographs. Buy and read this book (and share it with friends) if you have any interest at all in coal people and Appalachia.

Mineral Impurities in Coal Combustion: Behavior, Problems, and Remedial Measures
Published in Hardcover by Hemisphere Pub (May, 1985)
Author: Erich Raask
Average review score:

From the UK to the US Coals
Mr. Raask shows the impact of various coal constituents throughout this book. I never would have imagined someone going into this much detail with solid data and information to back up his theories. If varying coal quality is a problem for you this book can provide detailed insight as to why a particular problem is occurring. Although most of his information is based on coals from the UK others coals are addressed as well from the US and Australia. There are even specific mines addressed as well.

Misko

Author: Alvena Seckar

"We're all brothers..."
This slim volume is one of three young adult books written by Alvena Seckar, whose parents emigrated from Slovakia to the US at the turn of the century. Seckar writes about the hard life in the coal mining camps back then and how the Slovak community bands together for strength and survival. Like her other two books, Misko was originally published in the 1950s and then reissued in 1999 by Bolchazy-Carducci Publishers, well known promoters of Slovak culture. Thanks to the resurrection of these stories, modern readers can get an idea of the hardships and dangers shouldered by our brave forebears. Mining communities could be dangerous places back then (and even today) and Seckar's stories describe the unsafe conditions these immigrants often had to work under. Misko is a delightful mixture of other things as well: a love story, a fairy tale cottage and a morality tale, all woven together. Unlike her other two books, though, Misko's theme is heavily Lithuanian, as reflected in the Salitinis and Gabus' families. The camp is a diverse community, though, with an Italian family playing an important role as well. The theme of brotherhood shines through in Misko, echoed in the sentiments of Mr. Gabus: "We're all brothers somewhere down the line whether we're Indians from India, Indians from America or Lithuanians from Russia!" Seckar offers up other timeless wisdoms, like Misko's befriending of the "crippled" Leo (who suffers from cerebral palsy) and Frank's sympathy for the bullies who taunt Leo: "They just need someone to take an interest in them and keep them occupied." As the book was written in the 1950s, some of the language is dated ("swell" or "sore") but at any rate, Mrs. Verna's belief that "happiness is found doing good for others" is timeless advice for us all. B&W illustrations included.

Love this one-of-a-kind book
This book of reminiscences was written to celebrate the true gentlemen the author encountered in the mines when he was young. Even coal-minnig has an appeal when you get to work with men like this. A book which celebrates the dignity of labor and the satisfaction of working with good companions.

Steam Locomotive: Coal Stations and Diesel Locomotives
Published in Paperback by Motorbooks International (August, 2002)
Author: Thomas Dixon
Average review score:

A Gem
Author Corns has studied Ohio's Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway for decades, and his passion for the subject shines through in this definitive volume. Hundreds of sharply reproduced black-and-white photographs, thoroughly captioned and most never before published, augment a detail-rich text that brings to life an important and relatively unheralded piece of American railway history.

Train and rolling stock photos predominate, as would be expected, but remarkable images of long-gone stations, engine terminals, yards, and workers also grace the pages.

The W&LE, itself an amalgamation of small companies, was leased to the larger Nickel Plate Road in 1949, and it is at this logical point in the Wheeling's rather tumultuous history that the author concludes his review.

This book is a gem, and holds much of interest for railfans, modelers, historians, and Ohioans alike.

A great look at the value of heritage, and a fantastic read!
This book is a fantastic read!
Not only because of the fact it has so many great archive photos, some of which I haven't seen before, but because it takes a look at the immigrant anthracite coal miners personal story, including the organization of the UMWA, (United Mine Workers of America), as well as the role of coal mining being an integral part of the Industrial Revolutions starting drive. I found it to be well worth it's value, (29.99 plus ship/hand) especially since the 100th anniversary celebration of the Great UMWA Strike is here, (1902 was the Strike). It complements the PBS broadcast, and EMMY nominated film it was based on nicely. (the VHS of the film is available for purchase also, I got that too). But in any light, it makes a great coffeetable book, as well as a nice conversation piece for gatherings, and is highly recommended by this lover of heritage.

Charming children's story
My 2 year old daughter loves this book - it is a must at bedtime. My earliest memories include my father reading this book to me and I love carrying on the tradition....P>Note to parents: it is nice and short :-) long enough that she is satisfied and short enough to read again (and again and again)
